The producers of "Hannibal" approached David Mamet (The Untouchables, Glengarry Glen Ross, Wag The Dog, State And Main...) to write the screenplay. His first draft was rejected because it was too different from the book and too many liberties were taken with the established characters. Steven Zaillian (The Falcon And The Snowman, Awakenings, Schindler's List, Mission: Impossible, A Civil Action...) was called in to try his hand and after a few polishes, his script was the one finally produced. The WGA (Writers Guild of America) awarded screenplay credit to David Mamet and Steven Zaillian because Mamet was "the originator of the characters in script form". However, Zaillian did not rewrite Mamet's draft. Which is the better screenplay? Judge for yourself. This week's update includes both Mamet's & Zaillian's scripts.
