TRIVIA: Producer/writer/director Robert Penn Warren originally offered the role of Willie Stark to John Wayne. Upon reading the script, Wayne sent an angry letter to his agent saying he despised the story, saying it was anti-American and that he should "...take this script and shove it up Robert Rossen's derriere..." The part went to Broderick Crawford. That year John Wayne was nominated for an Academy Award for "Sands Of Iwo Jima." He lost to Crawford and his portrayal of Willie Stark.
